Earthquake Safety of India (EqSI) is a charitable, non-profit organization committed to improving earthquake resilience across India by advancing construction practices, strengthening existing buildings, and spreading awareness among professionals, institutions and citizens. Our core purpose is to reduce loss of life, property damage, and social disruption caused by earthquakes through knowledge-driven, practical, and ethical engineering solutions.
India is amoung the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, with nearlu 60% of its landmass is lying in moderate to severe seismic zones. Despite this reality, a large portion of buildings-especially residential, educational, and small commercial structures- are either non-engineered or inadequately designed for seismic forces. EqSI was established to respond to this critical gap between known seismic risk and actual construction practice.
EqSI is maintained by highly experienced practicing engineers who are actually involved in structural design, construction supervision, structural audits, retrofitting, and disaster mitigation projects across different parts of India. Their day-to-day engagement with real buildings, real constraints, and real communities ensures that EqSI's guidance is grounded, implementable, and sensitive to local conditions.
The organization is advised and technically guided by senior professors from the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), National Institute of Technology (NITs), who bring decades of academic excellence, research leadership, and international exposure in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. This unique collaboration between design engineers, field engineers and academic experts forms the backbone of EqSI, ensuring a balance between theory and practice.
earthquakes are low-frequently nut high-impact disasters. Unlike floods or cyclones, earthquakes strike without warning and cause sudden, catastrophic damage- primarily due to unsafe buildings rather than ground shaking alone. Past earthquakes in india have shown that well-designed and well-constructed buildings perform significantly better, saving lives even during strong shaking.
EqSI belives that most earthquake-related losses are preventable through:
Our work focuses on making these principles understandable and achievable for all stakeholders.
Our mission is to serve as a trusted national platform that connects practicing engineers, academic experts, policymakers, and the public- working together to build a safe and more earthquake-resilient india
